Mariusz Libel (b. 1978) has been active in the field of public art for many years. From 1998 to 2011, he co-founded the art group “Twożywo” with Krzysztof Sidorek. Since 2011, he has been carrying out individual projects, such as murals, illustrations, stencils, web and publishing projects, and posters.
He represents urban art and an engaged dasein. In his work, he combines philosophical reflection with a critical examination of contemporary social reality. He creates projects at the intersection of conceptual poetry and graphic art. He is a recipient of the “Polityka” Passport Award (2006) in the “Visual Arts” category and has received multiple grants from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
Mariusz Libel has always (both during his time with the famous group Twożywo and today) addressed social and philosophical themes in his work. The artist makes use of the ambiguity of words, behind which important existential questions are always hidden, presented in a distinctive typographic form. Mariusz Libel juxtaposes phrases with diverse meanings, deconstructing them, which gives the viewer the opportunity to interpret the content independently and take the side they deem appropriate. Importantly, the artist’s works do not offer a single, “correct” answer to the questions posed. The viewer, without fear of being misunderstood, of political incorrectness, or of a lack of faith, can provide an answer only to themselves or engage in a collective discussion with the community in which they live. Mariusz Libel’s work is not intended to be a controversial commentary on reality. The artist’s work is sensitive and attuned to social issues, human perception, and the life experiences of everyone who engages with it—just as he himself is attuned to relationships and intellectual exchange with others. This is particularly evident in the artist’s creative process, as he often works collectively, collaborating with artistic groups such as Pinokio, Twożywo, and Niczero, or with other figures in the art world, such as Urszula Pieregończuk and enenek.
